Black iron pipe — The traditional standard. Durable, reliable, used in most homes built before the 1990s. Repairs and extensions are straightforward when done by someone who knows what they’re doing.

CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing) — Flexible yellow or black jacketed tubing common in homes built or renovated since the 1990s. Faster to install, but requires proper bonding to protect against lightning-induced damage. If you have CSST and don’t know whether it’s been properly bonded, that’s worth checking.

Copper — Used for gas in some older installations, though less common. Acceptable for certain applications but not permitted for natural gas in all jurisdictions.

Do I need a permit for gas line work in North Carolina?

Yes. In North Carolina, gas line installation and most repairs must be performed by a licensed mechanical contractor and require a permit. We are licensed, we pull the permit, and we schedule the inspection. You don't deal with any of it — and the work is on record, which matters for your insurance and when you sell the home.

Can you run a gas line to my outdoor grill or generator?

Yes, and it's one of the most common jobs we do in the Charlotte area. A dedicated gas line to an outdoor grill eliminates propane tanks. A line to a standby generator means automatic backup power without refueling. We run the line from your meter, size it correctly for the load, and install a shutoff at the connection point.

What's the difference between natural gas and propane lines?

The pipes and fittings can be similar, but the regulator pressures, appliance orifice sizes, and BTU ratings differ between natural gas and propane. An appliance set up for one fuel source won't work correctly — or safely — on the other without conversion. If you're switching fuels or moving an appliance, we verify the setup before connecting anything.

How do I know if I have a gas leak?

Natural gas and propane are both odorless in their natural state. Utility companies add mercaptan — a sulfur compound — so you can detect leaks by smell. If you notice a rotten egg or sulfur odor, that's the signal. Other signs: a hissing sound near a line or appliance, dead vegetation in a line path outside, or unexplained increases in your gas bill. If you smell gas strongly inside — leave first, call second.
